Meet Kathy

Hello and thank you for your interest!

The path to writing my memoir was an organic and unexpected journey. In other words, writing took me; I didn’t take it.

I was going through a very messy divorce and had to protect my four boys, myself and our home. I desperately needed an income and decided to create a job for myself. I launched my own magazine. I was a one-woman show: as an advertiser-based magazine, I sold the advertising, created the ads and the publication successfully for five years before I sold the business.

The inside front cover of each issue had a blurb “Message from the Publisher” where I wrote a couple of paragraphs about me and my four boys. Soon I started hearing more about my blurb than about the publication!

After selling the magazine, I took a leap of faith and contacted our local paper with a proposal to write a column called “This is Life”. I wrote weekly for a year.

A colleague of mine emailed me a request from the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) for stories of Alberta women who had experience domestic abuse. I thought of my story for a couple of days and one night late into the evening, I sat down and banged out the words. My story was chosen and published.

The ACWS also asked me to read my story at the media launch and for the next year, I toured ACWS fundraisers to talk about my experiences.

So you see, writing took me on an incredible journey of self-publishing four books ... and counting.
